Has the average movie length changed over time?

Blockbusters have grown steadily longer since the 1990s. Franchise filmmaking, extended climaxes, and global market demands all contribute to longer runtimes.

In the 1960s–1980s, major studio releases often ran 90–120 minutes. By the 2010s, top-grossing films regularly exceeded 130 minutes — The Lord of the Rings, Avengers: Endgame, and Oppenheimer are emblematic.

Streaming has introduced shorter formats for some originals, but theatrical tentpoles continue to lengthen.
